PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Five people have been injured and about 100 are homeless as a fire burned into the morning at an apartment complex in northeast Philadelphia.
The blaze at the Rita Grace Manor complex on Academy Road in Torresdale began in the basement around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and was brought under control by 8:20 a.m.
Firefighters continued to battle hot spots Wednesday morning.
Officials said strong winds helped spread the fire and hampered fire crews in subduing the flames.
The city’s Office of Emergency Management said a shelter for displaced residents had been set up at nearby Lincoln High School.
Officials described the injuries as minor.
Academy Road and an Interstate 95 interchange were closed into the morning. The exit ramps reopened around 6 a.m.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
