PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Maine officials are seeking grant proposals that promise to create improved recreational boating access.

State officials say Maine has 500 public recreational boat access sites, and the state wants to increase access to the state’s ponds, lakes, rivers, streams and coastline. The grants are limited to a $150,000 maximum each and proposals are due by June 24.

The state says qualifying projects must be finished by June 30, 2017. Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry spokesman George Powell says money for the projects would come from the state’s fiscal 2016 budget. Fiscal 2016 begins July 1.
