CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - A girl’s high school basketball team in Charlotte will not be going to New York to play in a post-season tournament.

Multiple media outlets reported that the North Carolina High School Athletic Association board has denied Myers Park’s appeal that it be allowed to play in the DICK’S Sporting Goods national championship in New York City next month.

Myers Park has been nationally ranked in polls. The Mustangs have a 119-4 record in the past four years, including two state championships.

But the association board refused to change a rule that prohibits teams from playing after their North Carolina season ends.

Coach Barbara Nelson said she’s disappointed but not surprised by the decision.

The board did say it will take another look at the rule at a meeting in May.
