WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) - Westerly police officers will carry heroin overdose antidote Narcan.

The Westerly Sun reports (https://bit.ly/1MN2kzS ) that Narcan will be included in ‘duty bags’ to be used when police encounter people overdosing on heroin or other opiates.

Westerly Police Chief Edward St. Clair said young people between the ages of 16 and 20 are commonly using heroin. He also said there’s been a “huge increase” in heroin in Westerly and a significant rise in heroin arrests.

St. Clair says at least six people have died in the past two years as a result of heroin overdoses.

He said all his officers have been trained to administer Narcan.

Providence police trained and equipped officers last summer to administer Narcan.
