MERIDIAN, Miss. (AP) - Meridian households can have any combination of cats and dogs - such as four cats and two dogs - as long as the number does not exceed six.

The city council voted 3-1 Tuesday to enact the limitation. The limitation applies only to cats and dogs.

The Meridian Star reports (https://bit.ly/1B04uWh ) the council also voted to increase fines for violators and set a limit on the time they can keep kittens or puppies.

Councilman Randy Hammon says the changes to the city’s Animal Control ordinance were needed. He says some people cannot control themselves when it comes to keeping large numbers of cats and dogs.

Hammon says the council had debated whether to restrict the number to three or four but agreed to six.
