NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Two fishermen whose boat began sinking near Block Island have been taken to safety by the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard says the men contacted Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, around noon Monday after they realized their 38-foot fishing boat “More Misery” was taking on water about 10 miles south of Newport, Rhode Island.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod and two 45-foot response boat crews from Coast Guard Station Castle Hill and Coast Guard Station Judith Point were launched to assist the men.

The Coast Guard says the fishermen had the necessary safety equipment on board in case they needed to abandon ship.

The Castle Hill crew took the fishermen aboard while the other crews dewatered the boat and towed it back to Newport.
