PHOENIX (AP) - Gov. Doug Ducey has signed a bill giving property tax breaks to owners of buildings leased by churches.

Ducey signed House Bill 2128 Monday. It’s designed to give churches leasing space the same type of tax break churches which own their own buildings receive. Building owners are expected to pass their savings on to their tenants.

Democrats say it gives churches lower rates the Legislature doesn’t offer to other nonprofits, such as domestic violence shelters.

Republicans embraced the bill, which is championed by the Center for Arizona Policy.

The bill passed the House on a 33-25 vote and the Senate on a 18-11 vote.

The costs will be passed on to other property owners in each county.

The same proposal was vetoed by then-Gov. Jan Brewer last year.
