SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon Corrections Department says the weekend death of a 62-year-old state penitentiary inmate is under investigation.

The agency said Monday that Richard Paul Thompson, Jr., was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday evening and pronounced dead.

The inmate entered the state prison system in March 2005 out of Deschutes County for crimes including first-degree rape and first-degree kidnapping. His earliest release date was in January 2021.

No other details were provided.

The penitentiary in Salem is Oregon’s only maximum-security prison. It houses more than 2,000 male inmates.
