VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) - An eighth-grade Vermillion boy correctly spelled “nondescript” to win South Dakota’s statewide spelling bee.

Owen Dudley of Vermillion Middle School is the winner of the 2015 South Dakota State Spelling Bee hosted by the University of South Dakota.

Dudley will go on to represent the state at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in May.

Dudley outlasted fourteen other spellers during the competition.

Fifth-grader Hari Kadarkaraisamy of Jolley Elementary School in Vermillion was the runner-up. Seventh-grader Helen Zhang of George S. Mickelson Middle School in Brookings won third place.
