GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a state road employee has been struck and killed while working in the median of U.S. Highway 70 near Goldsboro.

Troopers told media outlets that a vehicle ran into the worker around 11 a.m. in a marked work zone in Wayne County, several miles west of Goldsboro.

The state Department of Transportation identified its employee as 36-year-old William Bailey. The DOT says Bailey was an engineering technician who worked for the agency for five years.

Troopers say the driver of the vehicle that hit and killed Bailey was impaired. She was in custody, but had not been charged.
