OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Bail was set Monday at $1 million for a 24-year-old Lacey man accused of two sexual assaults and accused of briefly stealing a vehicle with two small children inside.

The car was stolen on the morning of March 18 outside a private school in Lacey, near Olympia. A school official says a mother briefly left two children, between the ages of 3 and 5, in the car while dropping off a third child. The thief abandoned the vehicle about 12 blocks away in a day care parking lot. The children were unhurt.

Curtis Eugene Harmon told a Thurston County Superior Court judge on Monday that he was innocent, then scuffled with officers who tried to escort him away, The Olympian reported (https://is.gd/X0NKk2).

“How are you going to charge me with something I didn’t do?” Harmon asked Judge Anne Hirsch via the courtroom’s video monitor during the preliminary hearing.

Police accuse him in one sexual assault shortly before the car was stolen and another that occurred March 14.

Harmon was arrested for investigation of offenses including first-degree robbery, theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of first-degree rape and two counts of reckless endangerment.

He was arrested March 19 in Portland, Oregon.

About an hour before the car theft, a 63-year-old woman reported she was sexually assaulted while walking to a Lacey bus stop, court documents said. That site was about 2 miles from the auto theft.

The Thurston County sheriff’s office reported that Harmon was also arrested for investigation in the March 14 sexual assault and robbery of a 26-year-old woman.

He’s next due in court April 7.

It was not known late Monday whether Harmon was represented by a lawyer.
