MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - Two men have been sentenced in Stanislaus County Superior Court for first-degree murder and attempted carjacking in an encounter that took the life of a 21-year-old man nearly five years ago.

Superior Court Judge Scott Steffen on Monday sentenced 19-year-old Turlock Diaz to 52 years and six months to life in prison. Twenty-three-year-old Daniel Pantoja was sentenced 27 years and six months to life in prison.

Michelle Bettencourt, the mother of victim Chaz Bettencourt, tells the Modesto Bee (https://bit.ly/1Cj2nC7) she will attend every parole hearing for the two men convicted in her son’s August 2010 shooting death outside a convenience store in Riverbank.

She says she told the defendants she will be “the nightmare to haunt your lives like you haunted mine.”
