AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - The former head of the Maine Center for Disease Control has resigned from her new state job.

The Department of Health and Human Services said Tuesday that Dr. Sheila Pinette has resigned her post as the department’s chief health officer. Pinette had held that position since February.

Officials say Pinette has agreed to perform some work for the department on a contractual basis.

Dr. Christopher Pezzullo has been named acting chief health officer. He has been serving as the Medical Director of the Division of Population Health at the Maine CDC since 2012.
