FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Fredericksburg officials are urging residents to stay out of a section of the Rappahannock River following a sewer main break.

A notice posted on the city’s website says residents and their pets shouldn’t enter the river for about 1 mile downstream from the Blue-Gray Parkway Bridge. Residents and pets also should stay out of Smith Run and Hazel Run.

The advisory is in effect until noon Wednesday.

According to the notice, the broken main was discovered along Smith Run on Sunday night near an apartment complex. The break sent raw wastewater into Smith Run and eventually into the river.

Crews are working to replace the main’s broken section and restore the area.
