WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa sheriff’s deputy is recovering from a fractured eye socket after she was beaten by an inmate at the Black Hawk County Jail.

Court documents say 36-year-old John Delroy Young punched Melissa Crozier in the face several times when she issued him a citation for disrespecting a jail staff member. Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Rick Abben says Cozier hospital release was scheduled for Monday, though she won’t yet return to duty.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1HwXZzf ) that Crozier sustained a fractured orbital bone in the assault Saturday and was transported to the Mayo Clinic-St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

Young has charged with assault on an officer and willful injury causing serious injury. Online court records don’t list an attorney to request comment on his behalf.
