PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine minor league baseball team has denied a claim from a Virginia-based animal rights group that it’s pulling Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine Lobster from its ballpark menu because of pressure from activists.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said Monday that the Portland Sea Dogs are dumping Linda Bean’s because of a PETA investigation that “showed lobsters and crabs who were writhing after being mutilated.”

Sea Dogs spokesman Chris Cameron said PETA’s release is “misleading.” He says the ballpark will no longer be working with Linda Bean’s “based on business reasons.” Cameron says the company is finalizing a contract with a new lobster provider.

A lawyer representing Linda Bean’s says, “Sea Dogs team representatives have not endeavored to discuss the matter with us in any fashion.”
