SAN ANTONIO (AP) - A jury has ruled that a man must serve 10 years in prison for seriously injuring a Bexar County sheriff’s deputy while driving drunk in 2013.

Rodrigo Picon-Garcia was sentenced to prison Monday in the December 2013 wreck that fractured Deputy Candice Rodriguez’s spine and broke her leg. Rodriguez had been helping a stranded motorist.

Picon-Garcia’s defense attorney had asked for probation or a light sentence. Prosecutors had asked for the full 20 years allowed by law for the crime.

Picon-Garcia was convicted last week of intoxicated assault of a public servant.
