NEW YORK (AP) - Design plans for the most ambitious and modern bus route overhaul in New York City’s history envision a much faster commute for about 30,000 Queens residents who rely on the bus with few other public transit options.

City officials say the Bus Rapid Transit system would create a faster, prettier and safer ride. The 14-mile corridor cuts through Queens all the way out to the oceanfront Rockaways.

The final design and funding details are still in the works.

Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg says the $200 million project would create a dedicated lane and bus stations that are protected from the elements.

The route includes the congested Woodhaven and Cross Bay boulevards. Streets would be redesigned to improve traffic flow.

Road median refuges and trees would be added to protect pedestrians.
