NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - New Haven Mayor Toni Harp says a police officer has been placed on desk duty after video images showed him taking a 15-year-old girl to the ground during an arrest at a St. Patrick’s Day parade.

The New Haven Register reported (https://bit.ly/1FCevRe) Harp spoke after about 20 demonstrators came to her office on Tuesday, a day another public protest.

A protest leader, Barbara Fair, said she’s glad the officer is off the streets, but she wants an independent investigation.

Police union President Louis Cavaliere said an internal investigation has been launched into the March 15 arrest. He said the officer used proper police training and that the youngster had a weapon, referring to a knife police allegedly took.

The girl’s grandmother attended Monday’s demonstration and said she’ll fight the charges filed against her granddaughter.
