SWEET BRIAR, Va. (AP) - Sweet Briar College’s planned shutdown continues to generate opposition, and now includes a call for the president to resign.

An alumnae group, Saving Sweet Briar Inc., issued the call Monday for President James Jones’ resignation, according to media reports. An attorney representing the college did not return an email from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Meanwhile, the county attorney for Amherst has warned Sweet Briar to prepare for potential legal action over the planned closure.

March 3, Sweet Briar’s board announced that the woman’s college would close at the end of this academic year because of “insurmountable financial challenges.”

In response, Sweet Briar alumnae vowed to fight the closure.

Faculty leaders have also voted to oppose the decision to close the school.
