DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Pay raises have been approved for the Des Moines mayor and city council members.

The Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/1CU20Qz ) reports the raises are the first for Des Moines’ elected officials in 10 years. The City Council voted 6-0 Monday, with one councilman abstaining but voicing support, to approve the salary increases.

The mayor’s annual base salary will increase by 70 percent from $30,555 to $52,000 starting in 2016. Compensation for City Council members will rise 22 percent from $21,340 to $26,000 a year.

State law requires that an election take place before council-approved pay changes take effect. The next city election is in November. The pay raises would begin in January.
