WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (AP) - Police have identified a 10-year-old southeastern Kentucky boy who was killed after being hit by his school bus as he returned home from school.

Kentucky State Police said in a statement that Jonathan A. Chatham of Rockhold in Whitley County died at the scene Monday after being struck by a bus driven by 33-year-old Amanda Woliver.

Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell said one or both of the child’s parents were waiting for him and saw him get hit. He called the wreck a “pure accident” and said the bus driver was distraught afterward and taken to a hospital.

He said the boy cleared the bus but somehow went into the ditch line and came back under the wheels.

State police say no drug or alcohol use is suspected. The investigation is continuing.
