ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Alaska State Troopers say a soldier from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson has survived a 500-foot slide while hiking an Anchorage slope.

Anchorage television station KTUU (https://is.gd/74nF0Z) reports 24-year-old Richard Sjerven fell down Flattop Mountain on Monday.

Authorities were notified shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday by 19-year-old Kasey Rivers, who reported the fall down a steep slope.

Troopers and an air ambulance helicopter responded to the scene and contacted Sjerven.

Troopers say Sjerven declined a ride in the helicopter and walked the rest of the way out of the trail system.

According to troopers, Sjerven made his own arrangements for treating his injuries.
