SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Southern Utah University officials say a new $7.5 million donation is the largest in the institution’s history.

The gift announced Tuesday will be used for a new business school building and student scholarships at the school located in Cedar City, about 250 miles south of Salt Lake City.

The donation comes from a foundation started by Dixie and Anne Leavitt, a couple who met at what was then Branch Agricultural College.

Officials say Dixie Leavitt went on to found The Leavitt Group, which is now the country’s 7th largest privately held insurance brokerage, and had made several donations to the school.

School authorities say the number of business majors at SUU has doubled since the current business building was constructed in 1980 and the program needs more space.
