PHOENIX (AP) - A Laveen man is accused of whipping his three stepchildren with an electrical cord after they discharged a gun they were handling.

Authorities say the children’s mother also is accused of hitting her 9-year-old son in the face.

They say 34-year-old Tyree Young has been booked into jail on suspicion of four counts of child abuse while 34-year-old Yvonne Orona is being held on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Neither had a lawyer at their court appearance Tuesday. Young’s bond is set at $3,000 and Orona’s bond is $2,100.

Young allegedly used a looped electrical cord to whip his 2-year-old and 9-year-old stepsons and his 4-year-old stepdaughter multiple times.

Authorities say the 9-year-old boy was in a bedroom playing with siblings when a gun in the mattress fell to the floor.
