JOHNSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Authorities have released the identity of a man who deputies say was shot and killed after firing on officers in the Florence County community of Johnsonville.

The coroner says 27-year-old Jeremy Lorenza Kelly died in the incident after police were called shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Sheriff’s Maj. Mike Nunn tells local media outlets that police and deputies responded to a home in Johnsonville after reports of gunshots. A man in the house later fled into nearby woods and fired at officers as they awaited a SWAT team.

Officers tried to talk the man into surrendering, but he again fired and the officers returned fire.

The victim is the brother of a man missing from Florence County since August. A vigil was held for the missing man last weekend.
