DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An 18-year-old Des Moines father has been sentenced to up to 50 years in prison in the death of his infant son.

The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1BrbSub ) that 18-year-old Drew Weehler-Smith was sentenced Wednesday. He entered a plea deal in January to second-degree murder in the death of 4-month-old Gabriel King McFarland. He must serve 17 years before he is eligible for parole.

Prosecutors say Gabriel died April 22, 2014 after Weehler-Smith, then 17 years old, shook him. His death came weeks after he was adopted and then returned by court order to his birth mother.

Police say the birth mother left Gabriel alone with Weehler-Smith and returned to find him unresponsive. He was later declared dead.

At his sentencing hearing, Weehler-Smith apologized to everybody affected by the death.
