NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says it is investigating New Orleans’ second goat beheading in two months - this one with a samurai-style sword.

The SPCA received a 12-second cellphone video Tuesday showing at least five young men around a kiddie pool where a white goat with a brown head is pulled into the air with a rope and one man cuts off its head, SPCA Spokeswoman Alicia Haefele said Wednesday.

“The other men cheer in the background and record the felony act” with their cellphones, she wrote in a news release.

Investigators don’t know just when or where it happened, Haefele said, adding that the SPCA first received reports about such videos on Monday.

This killing appears unrelated to the Jan. 28 beheading of a baby pygmy goat that was part of a herd hired to crop weeds at a city park, Haefele said. That killing was overnight at the park; the video was made in bright daylight in what appears to be someone’s yard, she said.

However, she said, it makes officials wonder, “Is this a bigger trend?”

Within seven hours, the Louisiana SPCA had increased the amount of a reward it is offering for information leading to the killers’ conviction from $3,000 to $13,000.
