LANCASTER, Calif. (AP) - A Los Angeles County man convicted of killing his girlfriend with a sword in front of her four children has been sentenced to 36 years to life in state prison.

Thirty-five-year-old Jesus Humberto Canales was sentenced in the killing of 26-year-old Lucy Preciado on Tuesday. Preciado’s now 15-year-old daughter delivered a victim impact statement prior to the sentencing.

Prosecutors say Canales killed his live-in girlfriend in July 2008. At the time, Preciado’s children were between 7 months to 9 years old.

After the murder, Canales fled the United States. He was apprehended in Mexico five years later after an episode of “America’s Most Wanted.”

Canales was convicted of one-count of first-degree murder and four counts of child abuse on March 10th.
