LAS VEGAS (AP) - A defense attorney withdrew and a judge set a date to appoint new lawyers for a Las Vegas man facing a death penalty trial in the robbery of two pharmacies and killing of a clerk he used to work with.

Records show that defense attorney Tom Pitaro withdrew Tuesday from representing 25-year-old Jin William Young Ackerman II.

Clark County District Court Judge Jennifer Togliatti set an April 9 date to determine if public defenders will handle Ackerman’s case.

Ackerman is accused of robbing Walgreens stores at gunpoint Dec. 24 and Dec. 26, and shooting 58-year-old Antonino Isnit to death in the second robbery.

Ackerman has pleaded not guilty to murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and burglary with a weapon charges.

A 2016 trial date is expected.
