AKRON, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio man convicted in the slayings of his ex-girlfriend and their 5-year-old son has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

A jury had voted to spare 41-year-old Daniel Tighe (teye) from a potential death sentence. A judge on Wednesday sentenced the Akron man to life in prison plus at least 17 years.

Defense attorney Joseph Gorman says Tighe maintains his innocence and was granted a court-appointed lawyer to handle an appeal to a state district court.

Tighe was arrested in the 2013 deaths of 31-year-old Wendy Ralston and their son, Peyton, after Ralston’s mother found the decomposed remains wrapped in bedding in woods near her daughter’s home in Tallmadge (TAL’-mihj).

Tighe was convicted of charges including domestic violence, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence.
