JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The group behind the proposed Pebble Mine has hired a consulting firm to review whether the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency “acted fairly” in evaluating potential large-scale mining in the Bristol Bay region.

Pebble Limited Partnership spokesman Mike Heatwole said Pebble hired The Cohen Group because it was not certain that the various reviews of what it believes was EPA’s “misconduct” will be as thorough and comprehensive as Pebble thinks necessary.

Last year, the inspector general for the EPA announced plans to review EPA’s development of a report that provided the basis for EPA initiating a process under which it could restrict or prohibit development of the mine. The results of that are pending, as is the outcome of litigation against EPA by Pebble. There also have been congressional inquiries.
