NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A Poquoson man has lost his commercial fisherman’s license for a year for illegally taking oysters.

The Virginia Marine Resources Commission announced the revocation of Robert K. Topping Jr.’s license on Wednesday. Topping also lost his fishing privileges within Virginia’s tidal waters for a year.

The commission says Topping was convicted in January of taking oysters from a condemned area and removing oysters from a condemned area during a closed season.

Commissioner John M.R. Bull says the commission won’t tolerate an offense that potentially endangers consumer health.
