YORK, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina solicitor says the 3-month-old son of two police officers accused of abusing him say the infant is in a vegetative state and likely will never recover from his injuries.

Local media outlets report 16th Circuit Solicitor Kevin Brackett told a York County judge Wednesday that the abuse was so severe that Jaxon Jennings Taylor has retinal hemorrhage and bruises around his neck.

Brackett’s descriptions were the first time the severity of the alleged abuse has been detailed publicly.

Robert Jeffery Taylor, a 45-year-old former York police officer, appeared in court Wednesday had his bail set at $100,000 after his attorney requested $20,000 bail. The boy’s mother, 36-year-old Audrey Schurig, was arrested this month and charged with unlawful neglect of a child or helpless person.
