SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A standoff between Springfield police and a man authorities say was holding several people against their will ended with the man shooting himself.

Springfield Deputy Police Chief Dan Mounce says 36-year-old Juan Kincade shot himself early Wednesday as officers entered an apartment were the man was holding an unspecified number of people.

Authorities say a preliminary examination indicated Kincade sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday

Mounce says Kincade battered several people he was holding, resulting in minor injuries. Police say it was a domestic issue and those involved were being interviewed. There were children present.

Police were first called to Cedar Point apartments Tuesday afternoon. Authorities were in contact with the man into the early morning hours of Wednesday until officers heard a single gunshot.
