BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The University of Alabama at Birmingham has announced a six-year contract extension for men’s basketball coach Jerod Haase.

UAB President Ray Watts on Wednesday called Haase a “rising star” in college basketball and said the university wants him to take the program to unprecedented levels of success.

The extension comes on the heels of UAB’s upset victory over No. 3 Iowa State last week in the NCAA tournament.

Haase has been the Blazers’ head coach since 2012 and said long-term stability is important as he tries to build the UAB program.

The contract will pay Haase $1 million per year. The university announced that it also plans improvements to basketball facilities. The improvements come as the university fights off criticism for shuttering its fledgling football program in December.
