CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) - Top American skiers step into the starting gate for the U.S. Alpine Championships this week at Maine’s Sugarloaf resort.

Competition begins Wednesday with the men’s and women’s super-G, followed by giant slalom and slalom events later in the week.

Sugarloaf has hosted the national championships five times - the most recent being in 2008 - and the resort’s “Narrow Gauge Trail” is familiar to many up-and-coming skiers.

Reigning World Cup super-G and downhill title holder Lindsey Vonn and slalom champ Mikaela Shiffrin will be at Sugarloaf. For Shiffrin, it’ll be her first visit to Sugarloaf, and she’ll be competing in the slalom, the event in which she captured gold at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

Vonn isn’t scheduled to compete, but will test the giant slalom course before the race Thursday.
