WOOD RIVER, Ill. (AP) - Officials of the southern Illinois community of Wood River say the city’s mayor has died.

City Clerk Jan Sneed told The Telegraph in Alton (https://bit.ly/1GW62Wp ) that Mayor Fred Ufert passed away Wednesday morning.

City Manager Jim Schneider says Ufert had emergency heart surgery late Monday after it was discovered he’d suffered an aortic aneurysm. Ufert was reported in serious condition at Barnes-Jewish Hospital after the surgery.

The 65-year-old Ufert became mayor of Wood River in 2005.
