MARICOPA, Ariz. (AP) - A federal agency has cleared a planned overpass construction project intended to separate road and train traffic at a busy crossing in Maricopa.

The Federal Highway Administration concluded that the planned State Route 347 overpass at Union Pacific railroad tracks would have no significant environmental impact.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says the finding by the federal agency was the last approval necessary before it could begin acquiring the overpass site, completing the design and beginning construction when money is available.

According to ADOT, the $55 million overpass project is intended to alleviate highway traffic backups at the current at-grade crossing due to trains using the Union Pacific tracks.

ADOT plans to acquire the overpass site over the next several years and begin construction in 2020.
