WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A police dog is in quarantine after biting an 8-year-old girl in Wilmington.

A spokesman for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office tells area media outlets that the K-9 was exercising in a field behind a church on Wednesday afternoon when a mother and child approached the dog.

The officer motioned for the mother and child to get back when the dog bit the girl.

The child was taken to the hospital for treatment of five puncture wounds from the bite.

The dog has been quarantined for 10 days and the incident is being investigated.
