FORT DRUM, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Army’s‘ 10th Mountain Division has a new commander, but he’s someone many of the soldiers have already served under.

Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Bannister took over command of the northern New York military post and the units of the division during a ceremony held Wednesday at Fort Drum’s Magrath Sports Complex.

Bannister has succeeded Maj. Gen. Stephen Townsend, who’s taking over command of the 18th Airborne Corps based at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, pending congressional approval within the next week.

Gen. Bannister returns to Fort Drum after serving as director of strategy, plans and policy in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Pentagon. He was deputy commanding general for operations at Fort Drum from 2009 to October 2011.
