PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has appointed a new director to the Department of Public Works.

Elorza announced Wednesday that former U.S. Navy officer Russell Knight will lead the department. Knight has been working as an independent consultant for offshore oil drilling operations in North American since his retirement from the Navy in 2012.

Knight previously served as vice president for administration and operations at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, where he oversaw a $95 million annual budget. Before that he was chief executive officer for Naval Air Station Meridian in Mississippi.

Knight holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a master’s degree from the Naval War College.

Elorza says Knight’s administrative experience will be an asset to the city.
