ST. LOUIS (AP) - Residential customers of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District will not face extra charges for a billing mistake.

MSD officials on Wednesday clarified that only the bills of multifamily and commercial customers will be affected. Some apartment owners and renters, and 3,700 businesses, could still face high charges.

MSD had indicated Tuesday that about 1,900 residential customers could receive a letter seeking payment for unbilled services.

The average undercharge for an affected household is $450.

The district says the miscalculation began in May 2013. Spokesman Lance LeComb says the district buys meter data from a water utility called Missouri American to calculate many customer rates, but the new system’s data wasn’t properly computing with the district’s billing programs.
