RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Raleigh man has been sentenced to at least 19 years in prison for violently shaking his infant son, who later died from his injuries.

Local media outlets report that 31-year-old Demetrius Lashawne Morant pleaded guilty Wednesday to second-degree murder,

Morant admitted that he violently shook his 9-week-old son, Jrue Morant, in December 2012, when the boy was nine weeks old. The boy was taken to the hospital, where health care workers said he had severe brain injuries and detached retinas.

Jrue ultimately died in October 2013.

Morant told police his son had some kind of “medical episode” and that he gave him CPR before putting him back in his crib. He later admitted that he may have shaken the boy and “squeezed a little too hard.”
