PHOENIX (AP) - A newly issued ranking puts the Phoenix metro area among those nationally with the largest increases of population by headcount.

Data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau puts the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale metro area’s population gain at just under 85,000 from July 2013 to July 2014.

That puts the Phoenix area sixth among the top 10 metro areas in terms of numeric increases during that period. The top five are the Houston, Dallas, New York, Atlanta and Los Angeles metro areas.

Meanwhile, Maricopa County’s population increase during the same period was 74,000, second only to Texas’ Harris County, which includes Houston.

However, the increases for the Phoenix metro area and Maricopa County don’t rank in the top 10 by percentage, so they’re not among the fastest-growing in their categories.
