MASTIC BEACH, N.Y. (AP) - Police on eastern Long Island are investigating after an 11-year-old boy brought an unloaded handgun to school.

Suffolk County police say the incident happened Wednesday at the Tangier Smith Elementary School in Mastic Beach.

The student was not identified. He was charged with juvenile delinquency for bringing a weapon on school grounds. He was released to his parents. Police say no student was threatened.

The boy’s father was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and child endangerment. Police withheld his name in order to protect the identity of the child.

A statement on the William Floyd School District Website says no one was in danger. The school said officials also would take appropriate disciplinary action.
