JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Police are investigating a threatening letter sent to a northern Illinois sheriff who retired in December.

Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer tells The Herald-News (https://bit.ly/1BtZQ4j ) that the letter sent recently to Paul Kaupas (KOH’-puhs) threatens harm against him and his family. She says authorities are taking the letter “very seriously.”

Kaupas tells the newspaper he’s “had them before.” He declined to comment on what the letter said. He served as Will County sheriff for three terms.
