DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Delaware attorney general’s office says a state trooper was justified in using deadly force against a wanted man who shot and wounded him after a vehicle pursuit.

In a report issued this week, investigators with state Department of Justice said Cpl. Lloyd McCann reasonably believed his life was in danger when 29-year-old Dennis Hicks got out of his car and opened fire at him last June.

McCann, who was shot in the face and hand, returned fire, killing Hicks.

The shooting happened after McCann stopped Hicks for speeding, then learned that he was wanted on felony warrants for a domestic incident earlier that day involving his girlfriend.

McCann pursued Hicks’ car from State Route 1 near Frederica to a Magnolia neighborhood where Hicks stopped suddenly and started shooting.
