SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A Springfield alderman says he plans to introduce an ordinance to raise the city’s minimum wage to $10 an hour.

WTAX-AM Radio reports that 5th Ward Alderman Sam Cahnman plans to introduce the ordinance at the next City Council meeting. He says if the state won’t act, the city should.

Illinois voters in November approved an advisory referendum calling for a $10-an-hour statewide minimum wage.

Cahnman insists his proposal isn’t a stunt to get re-elected. He says he recently got the idea after learning that a Decatur City Council candidate proposed the same thing in that city.
