LOWELL, Mass. (AP) - A former pharmacy technician at a state-run hospital for the mentally ill has been charged with stealing prescription painkillers from the facility.

Stephen Lebourdais, of North Andover, was released on $4,500 cash bail after pleading not guilty in Lowell District Court on Wednesday to drug trafficking over 200 grams and larceny of a drug.

Authorities say while working at Tewksbury State Hospital he rigged a pill dispensing machine to steal more than 4,000 oxycodone pills.

The Sun (https://bit.ly/1M3gXnQ ) reports that the 33-year-old Lebourdais has been fired and had his license suspended by the state Pharmacy Board.

His attorney cited flaws with the investigation and said his client, with no prior criminal record, denies the allegations.
